Booklet Printing for Inspirational SE1 Charity

Booklet printing for SE1 charity

Just up the road in Union Street SE1 is the headquarters of United St Saviour’s Charity (‘UStSC’), who recently commissioned Southside Print to produce two A5 landscape booklets. Both were printed in full colour on our digital presses here in Tabard Street. They were printed on 200gsm Lumi Silk paper, a high quality coated stock with a significant thickness to give the booklets substance and a feel of real quality. 100 were produced for one booklet and 500 for the other, suiting our digital printing service perfectly — those modest quantities simply would not have been economically viable using a traditional litho printing service.

  • The first booklet was a twelve page publication called “The Value of Small Grants”. It represented a review of the impact of grants issued in South London by both UStSC and Peter Minet Trust.
  • The second booklet was called “Where to look for grants and funding”. This was a guide to help groups in Southwark find funding for their local activities. The cover of each booklet can be seen above in the main image.
  • Southside Print also produced 1000 A5 leaflets, which promoted a community open day, along with some A4 leaflets (not shown).

St Saviour's House, Union Street, London SE1About United St Saviour’s Charity, SE1

United St Saviour’s Charity is based in an attractive period building in Union Street SE1, just a short walk from London Bridge and Borough stations. They focus on uniting people and charitable organisations in north Southwark. Part of this includes the provision of two community grant programmes along with high quality sheltered housing for older people in the area.

Grant Programmes

Their open grant initiatives include the Community Investment Programme for large grants and the Community Engagement Programme for smaller grants. Both aim to strengthen communities in north Southwark, improve the lives of older residents in the area and level the playing field for those who may be experiencing social and economic disadvantage. North Southwark is very much ‘a tale of two Southwarks’ where one part of the population is benefiting from the recent growth and regeneration of the area while others simply struggle to make ends meet. In the last twelve months, the charity has invested £1 million into local projects and activities that are now helping to redress this imbalance.

Sheltered Housing

The sheltered housing element of UStSC’s work takes the form of two schemes; St Saviour’s Court, which provides 53 modern homes in Purley, and Hopton Gardens Almshouses, which provide twenty flats and Grade II period cottages in Hopton Street, SE1. Both schemes include 24 hour support services for the residents. To be eligible, applicants need to have worked in Southwark for at least 3 years before application, they must be 65 or older, have low income and capital and be able to live independently with help from carers if necessary.

The charity is also planning a brand new modern almshouse in Southwark Park Road in Bermondsey. It is currently in preliminary talks with the developer Delancey and architects Witherford Watson Mann and their shared vision for the new building is one of stunning quality and beauty. As well as providing modern, independent sheltered housing for older residents with limited income, the aim is also to Read more

Digital Printing for St George the Martyr, Borough

Digital printing for St George The Martyr, Borough High Street, London SE1

Poster printing for St George The Martyr, Borough High StreetSouthside Print have been producing a huge variety of digital printing recently for St George The Martyr, a church just down the road in Borough High Street in London’s SE1 district. Having selected us as their local printer some years ago, we’re delighted to say that they’ve remained a very loyal and regular customer and, as such, we’ve printed rather a lot for them in recent months!

Print Examples

Here are just a few examples of print work that we’ve recently supplied:

  • A series of stunning business cards were printed in full colour on our digital presses before being ‘soft touch laminated’ to both sides. This protects them and gives them a lovely velvety feel to the touch. We printed the cards on 450gsm silk coated stock and the finished result is superb. Note the beautiful imagery that features on one side of each card (see main image above).
  • The ‘Quest for Community’ poster/leaflet was printed in full colour, both sides onto 170gsm art paper, which has a beautiful gloss finish. This was part of the St George in Southwark Festival back in April 2016 and we rather like the graphics!
  • More recently, we printed a series of leaflets for the 2018 version of the same festival. Again, these were printed on our digital press, in full colour, once more using 170gsm glossy paper.
  • Digitally printed full colour leaflets and programmesAnother item that we printed recently for St George The Martyr is the A5 folded ‘New Home’ leaflet/brochure shown in one of the photographs on the right. Like the other leaflets and programmes mentioned above, these were also printed onto 170gsm paper stock except, this time, they had a silk coated finish rather than gloss.
  • Last but not least in our featured printing for St George The Martyr is a very interesting, perfect bound, 64 page A4 book. This details the history of the church and its surrounding community (see below for further details). The book features 340gsm covers and 170gsm ‘Arcoset’ internal pages and is printed digitally.

Today, as an integral part of the local community, the church is open most days and offers regular religious services and a Sunday School along with a varied array of inclusive programmes and events. These include anything from lunchtime concerts to Easter festivals. The church also runs a food bank, hosts The Dragon Café (the flagship project from ‘Mental Fight Club’) and offers a wide variety of additional opportunities to meet other people, get advice and to offer or indeed receive help of one form or another. The church also has a close relationship with its own school, St Jude’s Church of England Primary School, whose pupils sometimes sing at the services. Visitors to the church are always welcomed with open arms including those who would simply like to see the beautiful building itself or to take a look inside.

For some historical facts about St George the Martyr, please see our previous post from October 2015. That touched upon the Medieval and Roman structures uncovered during restoration works, the location originally being the site of a Norman church and the church’s links to Charles Dickens and Marshalsea Prison — it’s quite fascinating!

A4 perfect bound book, printed and produced by Southside Print, London SE1St George the Martyr’s Heritage

As mentioned above, St George the Martyr has produced some very interesting new booklets which detail the church’s history and that of the surrounding community. It provides a fascinating insight into the ever-changing area around Borough High Street. The lovely new books are available for sale from the church office.

The Church’s Lunch Club

During the summer holidays, St George the Martyr will be running a lunch club for local children and families who may be facing food poverty over the long holidays, particularly in the absence of free school meals during that period. The lunch club will provide a hot 2 course meal, free of charge, along with some fun activities for the children. The club will take place on Tuesdays, from 11am –1pm, between 24th July and 28th August 2018.

The club organisers would love to hear from any volunteers who may be able to offer help including assisting in the kitchen, serving meals, helping with the children’s activities (they are of pre-school and primary age). The church would also be happy to receive any food donations or financial contributions towards the running costs from any willing parties. Please see the contact information below if this is of interest.

Southside Print is pleased to include ‘Street League’ amongst its many customers. We’ll talk in depth about them in a moment but, before that, here’s a little about the kind of thing we print for them (the accompanying images show the examples discussed):

  • A3 posters for a Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair. These were digitally printed on 200gsm silk stock using the customer’s artwork supplied.

About Street League

What’s not to love about Street League! Street League is the leading sport for employment charity in the UK. Working across the United Kingdom and with four bases around London, it helps 16-24 year olds learn key skills to move them into employment, training, apprenticeships or college. This is done through career planning, mentoring, improvement to employability and life skills, help attaining nationally recognised qualifications, CV writing workshops, mock interviews and, last but not least, 100 hours of work experience. Sports, dance and fitness activities are available every day from trained football and dance coaches and there are social activities daily too. What’s more, travel expenses are paid and there is £50 worth of free Nike sportswear for each member! Those involved in the programme benefit from improved confidence and much greater employability. At the end of the 10-12 week programmes, typical opportunities can be found in retail, hospitality, sport administration and more.

Printed flyer for Street League's Jobs Fair event in early October“We believe that school is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and that you can find your own success in many different ways. Sport teaches teamwork, leadership, discipline and competitive spirit – not only beneficial on the pitch or in the dance studio, but also essential for the world of work.”

Street League hosted a free Jobs & Apprenticeships Fair in early October at Corams Fields Band Room in Guilford Street WC1N, London. The event was a great way for young adults to meet employers, learn about apprenticeship opportunities and improve networking skills. They could also take part in free fitness, dance and employability workshops at the event. Click the poster thumbnail for a larger view and for more detail.

Our HP Z6200 Large Format Printer – Perfect for Posters & Much More!

HP Z6200 large format printer

Back in May, we wrote about all the new, high tech printing and finishing machines that we’ve recently added to our printing arsenal here at Southside Print in London SE1. However, we only briefly touched upon our new HP Z6200 large format printer, with a promise to tell you more about it in a future blog post. Well, that time has now come and below we tell you all about the HP Z6200 and what it can do for you — which is potentially quite a lot!

It’s a versatile large format printer

The HP Z6200 or, to give it its full name, the “HP DesignJet Z6200 Photo Production Printer”, is a professional, high quality large format thermal inkjet printer, which can print up to 42″ (1.067 metres) wide by almost any length. HP Z6200 Large Format PrinterSo, a couple of obvious examples of what it can be used for are posters and banners. However, it’s actually way more versatile than that, as we’ll see.

While Southside Print typically uses the machine to print out onto 200gsm (thick paper/thin card) photo stock with a satin finish, the machine will actually print on a huge variety of base stock should the need arise. That includes backlit material for signs, canvas for fine art prints, roll-up banner material for pop-up banners, glossy paper and photographic paper for beautifully glossy photographs, bond and coated papers, films for technical use, self-adhesive materials, and some types of media even right up to 460gsm in weight — that’s a very thick card!

So, this printer is extremely versatile and can print you pretty much anything, including:

  • engineering CAD drawings,
  • event graphics,
  • fine art prints,
  • posters,
  • banners and signs,
  • exhibition graphics,
  • POP (point of purchase) graphics,
  • architectural (AEC) prints,
  • glossy photos,
  • backlit displays,
  • detailed maps
  • and so much more.

What we print mostly with this machine, though, is posters. Take a look at the images below to see just a small selection of the diverse range of posters that we’ve produced using this printer in recent times. Quite a range! Regular readers may also spot some local clients who have Read more

Say it loud with a Banner

Printed banners

Printing and production of banners is another natural application of our large format printing service so, for our next post we thought we’d show you a couple of different banners that we recently produced for local client The Dragon Café, in Borough High Street, London SE1 and The Green Street Green Society, which is over in Orpington, Kent.

Roller banner for Green StreetRoller Banners

Roller banners are a great way to present your brand, service, product or message in a near instant. What’s more, they ‘say it loud’ due to their large scale — options start from 850mm wide by approximately 2m high. Roller banners take literally seconds to erect and, after use, seconds to dismantle again, with the display graphics rolling down into a compact cassette that’s easy to transport and store in the supplied storage case, ready to be re-used at any time.

Southside Print London Bridge‘s roller banners are suitable for indoor use and are ideal for use in situations like office presentations, receptions, showrooms, trade fairs, events and shopping malls, to name just a few. Whether you’re using one or several, they’re an excellent way to make a splash with the minimum of time and effort. Many models are even robust enough to be used semi-permanently if required. All our roller banners use robust 400gsm ‘SoFlat’ material, for true lay-flat properties. They also have a matte finish to the front and a grey backing coat to the reverse. This combination helps to present the printed graphics in the best possible way, without any show-through from behind even when backlit. The surface is scuff and scratch resistant and is printed in fade-proof UV-based inks.

We offer various sizes and various different models, from economy grade right through to luxury. We can usually even replace the graphics in the future, should you need such a change. For more details, quotations and artwork specifications, contact us and we’d be delighted to help. We can even provide the design and artwork if you like.

Hanging Banners

Hanging banner for The Dragon Café, London SE1Hanging banners are great when you need to catch the eye of the public and let them know your message, or draw attention to an event, all in an instant. The best thing is that they can be used just about anywhere and are available in just about any size you can think of.

Our outdoor banners are printed on a flame-resistant, light-fast PVC, most commonly using a 440gsm weight/thickness although lots of other options are also available. These include Read more

Printed NCR Sets, Menus & Posters for Nelson’s Restaurant, SE1

Design and printing for Nelson's Restaurant

One of our favourite places to eat in Borough High Street is Nelson’s Sandwich Bar & Restaurant. Their food is delicious, freshly cooked and very affordable, but more about that in a moment.  First, we’ll tell you a little about the kind of design and print work we’ve been doing for them recently:

  • Our very own graphic designer Matt Potter designed and supplied artwork, to the customer’s brief, for their brand new menus. These were digitally printed/colour duplicated onto 200gsm white ‘Mondi’ stock. We printed them in full colour both sides onto SRA3 (oversize A3) card, trimmed them down to A3, gloss encapsulated them and then folded them to A4. The reason for the encapsulation, which both laminates the menus and seals the edges, is so that they are waterproof and are easily cleaned after use in the restaurant. We supplied just 28 menus, hence digitally printing them rather than using our litho presses.
  • Matt also designed, printed and supplied two A3 laminated signs/posters which are attractive and eye-catching for use in the restaurant. What better way to announce a special deal to customers!
  • 3-part NCR order padA very practical piece of print was a batch of 3-part NCR sets (pads) which are now being used by waiters and waitresses when taking orders. The restaurant required 100 pads, consisting of fifty 3-part NCR sets per pad. ‘NCR’ stands for No Carbon (as in carbon paper) Required. An NCR set is a multi-part pad, where a person can write on the top copy and, due to clever properties in the paper itself, the pressure of writing duplicates what’s being written onto subsequent sheets, so that different people can all have a copy. In this particular case, each of the 3-part sets has a printed white sheet at the top, followed by a blue and a yellow sheet underneath. So, for example, the waiter or waitress can keep a blue copy, the customer can have the top, white copy and the kitchen staff can have the 3rd, yellow copy. It’s quick and easy, particularly as we ‘micro perf’ (perforate) the pads so that pages can be torn off easily and also because we design the wrap-around cover so that it doubles up as protection under each 3-part set being written upon. That way the next set of 3 sheets doesn’t also duplicate the order. Each order pad also has a board back, to keep it rigid when being used.

Printing for St George The Martyr SE1

Printing for St George The MartyrSouthside Print London Bridge recently produced artwork and printing for St George the Martyr, a church just a stone’s throw away in Borough High Street, SE1. Included in the work were double-sided business cards which were litho printed in full colour onto 450gsm silk card then finished with a ‘Soft Touch’ lamination. Soft Touch lamination is similar to matt lamination except, as the name suggests, it feels softer, almost like ultra-fine velvet. It’s also very protective, giving the business cards significant resistance to water and accidental damage, meaning that tears and even surface scratches are both highly unlikely to occur.

Southside Print London Bridge also printed leaflets which were digitally printed in full colour onto 200gsm silk stock and various A1 posters which were printed onto 190gsm Photo Satin stock with a matt encapsulation finish. That wasn’t the only large format printing, however, as Southside Print also produced some 3m wide, 500mm high traditional style ‘welcome’ banners which included hemming and eyelets, along with some roller banners which stand 2m high by 850mm wide. These were supplied with a handy carrying case for easy and compact transportation and are a breeze to erect when needed.

About St George The Martyr

Named after Saint George, this Church of England was built in 1735 and falls under the diocese of Southwark.  Built of brick and Portland Stone it is of National historic importance. It lies in historic Borough, South London, located in Borough High Street at the junction of Long Lane, Tabard Street and Marshalsea Road.

Over the years the church had suffered from subsidence and in 2005 received repair funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund.  During the remedial works, Medieval and Roman structures were uncovered — the current building is the third church to be built on the present site, the first being Norman. Design & Print for Tranquility Pilates Centre

Tranquility-masthead2For some time, Southside Print London Bridge has produced design, artwork and printing for Tranquility Pilates Centre in London’s Blackfriars.  Work supplied to them includes A4 leaflets, business cards, posters, flyers, manuals and more. The most recent flyers and leaflets were printed on our digital printing presses in full colour using 350gsm stock (gloss or silk finish), while the posters were printed on a 190gsm ‘photo satin’ stock then finished with a gloss laminate for protection. We also printed and supplied a tall display banner and this was sized at 2m high by 850mm wide once assembled (also available 1m wide). The roller banners we supply are very ergonomic and robust. They are very easy and quick to assemble and also a breeze to store because they collapse down into a very compact size using an innovative cartridge system — and even come with a handy carrying bag. The banner print itself uses a high quality 400gsm paper with anti-curl, anti-scuff and anti-glare properties so will look fantastic and stand the test of time.

What’s really great to hear is that people have recently been making some nice comments about the design and printing:

“Re the new flyers you did last month….. people have commented on how good they look! Thank you!!”
