Borough market - blue plaque

We are printers in Borough, right in the heart of London SE1. Based in Tabard Street, Southside Print offers high quality printing to individuals, businesses, shops, charities and organisations across the Borough & SE1 region. So, whether you’re a resident who needs personal stationery, a cafe that needs printed menus, a pub that needs posters to promote gigs, an SE1 charity that needs fundraising literature, a shop that needs printed booklets or catalogues or one of the many businesses in the Borough that requires sales and marketing collateral, we can help. We’ll print everything for you at the highest quality, for a competitive price. What’s more, our turnaround times are hard to beat and we offer free local delivery and a click and collect service for those close by.

Perhaps you’re a little bit outside the Borough region. No problem! We print for companies and organisations everywhere in the UK and abroad and even have a web print shop where anyone in the world can order popular items like stationery, posters, brochures, leaflets and bound documents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. What can we print?

We can print pretty much anything you can think of! In fact, if it’s produced by printing ink on paper, chances are we can supply it.

The Borough

Entrance to Borough Market

The Borough is an extremely cosmopolitan community, with a really good buzz about it. You have Borough Market right at its heart and there you can pick up anything from gifts to fruit, vegetables, street food from around the world, the finest delicacies and much more. Pubs, restaurants, cafes and other eateries abound and throughout the Borough you have a huge abundance of shops including independent traders and high street brands all competing for the attention of shoppers. All these businesses and traders need to be at the top of their game to attract passers by so it’s important that they get their message across in window displays, inside and on their printed promotional literature. Many of them also hand out flyers in the SE1 streets. We can help with all of that not only by producing the finest print, but also by making it look a million dollars in the first place, courtesy of our in-house graphic designers. That’s where we can make a real difference in your ROI (return on investment) to ensure that you communicate your service or product USPs (unique selling propositions) and key messages clearly to your prospects. That’s how you are most likely to turn them into paying customers. Supplying your own artwork? That’s Read more

Lamination, Encapsulation or U.V. Varnish?

Lamination, encapsulation or varnish?

Have you ever seen a super-glossy brochure and wondered whether it’s gloss laminated … or perhaps gloss U.V. varnished? Even printing experts have trouble spotting the difference! To all intents and purposes, they look the same, but their production methods, costs and properties are very different.

Lamination

Lamination is a process whereby a thin, transparent, plastic film is bonded, under pressure, to the surface of your printed paper or card. The plastic film can have a variety of finishes including high gloss, soft-touch and matt.

  • Gloss lamination adds an incredible shine to documents and tends to enrich printed colours, also giving photos a greater depth due to the extra contrast they lend them.
  • Matt lamination gives printed documents a lower contrast and, as such, tends to give them a contemporary, lighter appearance along with a high quality look and feel.
  • Soft-touch lamination is similar in appearance to matt lamination but has a softer, more tactile feel to the touch. Some describe it as velvety, others suggest that it’s perhaps even a little rubbery in feel … but in a good way!

Either way, once laminated, the printed sheets are cut and finished so that the edge of the printed sheet is an exact match to the edge of the bonded lamination, with no difference or overhang of either. Lamination can be applied to one side of the sheet, or both.

Lamination gives the printed job additional protection against wear and tear. In fact, one way to be sure that a printed document is laminated is to try to tear it. If it’s nigh on impossible to tear, chances are it’s laminated. Lamination also gives documents protection against moisture, simply due to the presence of the plastic film that’s bonded to the surface.

Lamination is suitable for even reasonably high quantities of printing because it’s a high speed, mostly automated process. It’s used for protection, to give printed documents a lovely finish and to give them a feeling of high quality.

Encapsulation

Encapsulation is similar to lamination but the plastic film tends to be significantly thicker and is applied to both sides of the printed sheet. Uniquely with encapsulation, the plastic covering protrudes a few millimetres beyond the edge of the underlying printed sheet and indeed the plastic on the front and the plastic on the back bond to each other where they meet. This forms a tough ‘frame’ of thicker plastic around the edge of the printed sheet.

As with lamination, encapsulation protects the printed sheet from wear and tear and from moisture, however even more so than lamination due to the greater thickness of the plastic and the edges of the sheet also being protected by a double thickness of heat-bonded plastic.

Encapsulation is usually used for one-off or low quantity printing because it’s relatively expensive and time-consuming compared to lamination. It’s ideally suited to printed items that perhaps need to be displayed, manhandled regularly or used in environments that might otherwise lead to the printed item becoming dog-eared or spoiled by water ingress. Menus would be a good example.

U.V. Varnish

U.V. varnish is almost always encountered in a high gloss finish. However, it is also available in matt finish although that’s rarely seen. To even a trained eye, an overall gloss U.V. varnish looks almost identical to gloss lamination, giving the printed document a high gloss sheen that enriches the saturation of printed colours and gives photographs a deeper contrast and ‘punch’. However, the U.V. varnishing process is remarkably different to that of lamination. Unlike with lamination, the gloss sheen is actually Read more

Printing for Tabard Barbers, Tabard Street, SE1

Printing for Tabard Barbers, London SE1

Just along the road from Southside Print is Tabard Barbers. One of our nearest SE1 clients, they’ve been keeping us busy recently with quite a few different printing jobs — and very smart they look too. These include:

  • Printed loyalty and student cards for Tabard Barbers, London SE15000 full colour, digitally printed student ‘information’ cards. These can be thought of as both flyers and postcards depending upon your point of view. Their purpose is to publicise the special offers available to students during a period between September and the end of November 2018. They were printed on 350gsm card-weight material, sized at A6 in a landscape format and were printed to both sides.
  • Full colour, digitally printed loyalty cards for use by their customers. One version was for men and another for women. They were printed the size of standard credit cards, a size that’s convenient to store in one’s wallet, purse or pocket. One side was left uncoated so it can be rubber stamped each time the customer in question receives a hair cut or treatment of some kind, the idea being that they receive a free cut or treatment once they’ve filled the card with 9 stamps (the tenth being free). The other side was ‘soft touch’ laminated so that the cards feel good, look attractive and are protected from wear, tear and moisture. They were designed and artworked by a local design company based in Borough SE1.
Loyalty cards are a great marketing tool for businesses such as hair salons, barbers and cafés. They quietly encourage repeat business from customers and this loyalty means more profit for those businesses using them. And, because the customer benefits too once they’ve filled their card, it’s a win-win for everyone.
  • A full colour, digitally printed poster (shown below, right). This was sized at A1, so utilised our large format inkjet printing service. It was mounted to Foam-X, so it was both light weight and rigid.

About Tabard Barbers

Tabard Barbers one of our closest neighbours, being just along the road from Southside Print at 13 Tabard Street, from which they took their name. A1 poster digitally printed by Southside Print, SE1These days, as being a men’s barber, Tabard is a women’s hair salon which offers outstandingly good value compared to other hair salons in the area, under the fantastic management of the very talented Cece. At Tabard, it’s the full package; you will receive a warm welcome and complimentary refreshments along with “the very best hair styling, grooming and treatments in town” as it says on their website. Men’s grooming services include anything from a buzz cut to a beard trim while ladies’ services include a professional wash, cut and blow dry, hair ups, highlights, comprehensive colouring, bleaching and various treatments. Discounts are also available for students and children up to the age of 14 (see their site for details).

Tabard had an impressive ‘designer’ make-over in recent years and now skilfully combines ultra-modern interior design with historical details like exposed brickwork and stripped floorboards. Indeed, the building’s basement still contains the ancient ovens, which survived from a time when the building was used as a bakery long ago. These were discovered during renovations.

The salon and barbers is now one of the oldest family-run businesses in SE1 and Southwark. It has been in Tabard Street for nearly forty years, having been passed down the generations to the current owner, Dasos Anastasis. Read more
