What Makes Perfect Binding So … Perfect?

What Makes Perfect Binding so Perfect?

‘Perfect binding’ is one of the most popular and impressive ways of binding any kind of printed publication. It has a great look and lends some sophistication to any book, booklet, brochure, annual report, catalogue or magazine. ‘Wiro’ and ‘saddle-stitched’ binding, although both professional and presentable, look a little more basic by comparison. Perfect binding gives a publication more gravitas; a feeling of added value and something that subtly says ‘I am an important document’ without even trying. As such, perfect bound books are far more likely to be kept or handed from person to person. That’s great for your business and marketing goals.

Printing & perfect binding for Flint WinesSimilar to a ‘soft-back’ or ‘paperback’ book, perfect binding gives a professional finish with a ‘square’ spine, which can be printed on because it’s all part of the one-piece cover. So, you can have full colour graphics and imagery printed continuously from front cover, across the spine and around to the back cover, all without any interruption if you like. Of course, this applies to the addition of special finishes too, like gloss UV varnish, metallic foil and lamination to name just a few.

Tech Spec

At Southside Print in London SE1, we print and perfect bind totally in-house. That means total control over colour and quality, speedy turnarounds and the most competitive pricing. There are just a couple of limitations:

  • We can perfect bind up to A3 in length or width (so spines as long as 420mm are not a problem — that’s big!).
  • The spine can be as thick as a staggering 90mm — that allows a huge number of pages in the book and is thicker than many old-style phone directories!

We also use a super-strong new glue. This keeps your pages and covers securely bound — for the long term.

Perfect bound reports for 'Power to Change', London SE1Overnight Success

Our perfect binding service is also available on an overnight basis. So, if you’re in a terrible rush to get important documents and publications printed and perfect bound for the next business day, we can usually help, particularly if you give us a little bit of warning. This is great for annual reports that need to be ready for board meetings and AGM’s, or things like proposals, tenders, pitch documents and other important presentations that could win your company or organisation its next major contract.

Envelopes – A Comprehensive Guide

A comprehensive guide to envelopes

Having recently produced some overprinted C6 envelopes for local client The Dragon Café, we thought we’d put together a useful ready-reference guide to envelopes. We’ve included information on available shapes, sizes, formats, sealing mechanisms, styles, materials and more. There is also a note about overprinting options for those who need their own, unique envelope, perhaps showing their branding or allowing the envelope to serve a specific purpose, for example for collecting donations (see The Dragon Café’s fundraising example, shown below right). Take a look below and bookmark this page if you think it might be useful for future reference — we hope so!

Overprinted fundraising envelopes for Mental Fight Club, SE1Envelope Sizes

The three most popular size conventions for envelopes are ‘ISO C’ (‘C’ for short), ‘DL’ and square envelopes and we’ll explain how they work in a moment. There is also a fourth range, being the ‘ISO D’ sizes (used to suit ‘ISO B’ paper sizes) but they’re rarely used in the UK, so we’ll not go into detail about those here.

‘ISO C’ Sized Envelopes

You will be almost certainly be familiar with A4, A3 and A2 sized papers. These come from the ‘ISO A’ series of paper sizes. ‘ISO C’ sizes are a complementary range of sizes that are widely used with envelopes to house ‘A’ sized papers. So, for example, an unfolded A4 letter would fit neatly inside a C4 envelope (with a little breathing space). Meanwhile, if you fold an A4 letter in half (so it’s now A5), it would fit perfectly into a C5 envelope. If folded again into A6, it would fit nicely in a C6 envelope, and so on. Here are the most popular ISO C envelope sizes:

  • C3 envelopes are 458mm x 324mm
  • C4 envelopes are 324mm x 229mm
  • C5 envelopes are 229mm x 162mm
  • C6 envelopes are 162mm x 114mm

Now we’ll come onto what happens if you fold that A4 letter into three rather than two …

ISO ‘DL’ and ‘DLE’ Envelope Sizes

The envelope size 220mm x 110mm is commonly referred to by stationers and printers as ‘DL’ (short for DIN Lang, meaning DIN ‘Long’). It’s a perfect size to suit A4 letters folded into three. However, strictly speaking, true ‘DL’ is actually exactly one-third A4 i.e. 210mm x 99mm but true DL is seldom, if ever, used in the UK. So when we refer to ‘DL envelopes’ when speaking with stationers or printers in the UK, it’s understood that we’re really talking about ‘DLE’ size (the true name for 220mm x 110mm). It’s one of life’s little quirks!

Square Envelopes

The UK enjoys a huge range of different square envelope sizes. They are too numerous to list in full but the most popular among them include:

  • 80mm square
  • 100mm square
  • 105mm square
  • 110mm square
  • 116mm square
  • 120mm square
  • 126mm square
  • 130mm square
  • 140mm square
  • 155mm square
  • 160mm square
  • 164mm square
  • 220mm square
  • 240mm square
  • 254mm square
  • 317mm square

Envelope Opening Formats

When ordering envelopes from your printer or stationer, they may ask you whether you require ‘wallet’ or ‘pocket’ format. But what does that mean? ‘Wallet’ format simply means Read more

Digital printing for The Fawcett Society

Printing for The Fawcett Society

Application form printed by Southside Print, London BridgeJust around the corner from Southside Print’s London Bridge branch is the HQ of The Fawcett Society, which has its base in Union Street, SE1. Southside Print has recently produced printing and duplication for the Society including full colour A5 leaflets which were digitally printed onto 330gsm smooth white ‘Advocat’ board, AGM letters which were mail merged with a supplied database then printed/duplicated in black and white and some additional documents which were photocopied for the same event. The whole process was turned around very quickly. Design and artwork was supplied by the Society. Contact Southside Print here or call 020 7378 6754 if you have any similar requirements — we’d be delighted to help. You can also request a quotation online here.

About The Fawcett Society

In 1866 two sisters, Elizabeth Garett Anderson and Millicent Garett Fawcett (nee Garett), started their life-long campaign for women to get the vote and equal rights. It took them 60 years to achieve this goal, one which has since shaped women’s rights in so many areas of life, “helping to bring about a society where the gender you are does not limit the life chances you have” to quote their mission statement. The two women were extremely hard-working and knowledgeable and, with help from family and the suffragettes, became a force to be reckoned with.

Elizabeth died in 1917 and Millicent in 1929 but their work and legacy positively impacts society to this day — the Fawcett Society continues the hard work started by the two sisters from their HQ in London SE1 with a dedicated team launching campaigns, providing up-to-date news on all related issues and bringing about support for women in all aspects of life.

Campaigns

The Society’s most recent campaigns have included “Views Not Shoes” which looks into the issue where male leaders’ wives get more media attention than female politicians. As part of this, the Fawcett Society looked at how much media coverage female politicians and candidates got in the build-up to the 2015 Election, the nature of the coverage and how often women were central to the economic stories.

Other campaigns include “Women in the Economy” which addresses the question as to where women’s voices are in important economical matters along with their “Equal Pay Day” campaign which, as the name suggests, addresses the gender pay gap.

You can catch up on all these campaigns and more on their website at www.fawcettsociety.org.uk.  There you will also find latest news and issues together with details of how to support the Society or join one of the many local groups. You can also shop for Christmas gifts there (e.g. some great t-shirts) in their online shop.

Digital & Thermo Printing for Barberini Fashion

Digital & thermographic printing for Barberini FashionSouthside Print London Bridge has recently produced digitally printed posters, mounted to foamex, for Barberini Fashion. Business cards were also printed in black and white using a thermographical process for the SE1 business.

Thermographic (‘thermo’) printing

Thermo printing is another printing service offered by Southside Print and the process results in a slightly raised, textured and usually high gloss finish to the areas which have been printed. The printing technique is an inexpensive way to raise the level of type or graphics on the surface of a printed sheet without going to the expense of embossing. The result often has an ‘orange peel’ kind of texture, which is most commonly high gloss. The thermographic process itself involves sprinkling powdered resin onto the still-wet printing ink, which results in the powder sticking to only those parts of the paper or card which have been printed. The sheet is then passed through a heater unit which melts the powder and fuses it to the printed areas, resulting in the innovative finish. The process if often used on things like greetings cards, stationery and invitations and has even been known to print Braille text, due to its raised nature.

Printing for online furniture retailer Swoon Editions

Swoon-Editions-Masthead4When writing is part of your job there is a risk that, every once in a while, you will write about something which is so interesting that you spend three times as long researching it as you should! This blog post for Swoon Editions is such a case. Founded in 2012, Swoon Editions was the brainchild of Debbie Williamson and Brian Harrison whose joint vision was to create an online destination where you could buy beautifully designed, hand-crafted furniture at incredibly low prices. They made this possible by starting with limited production batches, minimising warehousing and overheads, and providing products straight from their artisan workshops direct to customers’ homes.

With their furniture falling into categories such as Retro, Shabby Chic, French Style, Industrial Edge and Contemporary to name just a few, their impressive range — and business model — are truly inspired. So too are the many accessories which are also available on the website; rugs, quilts, beautiful storage boxes and more. All items are hand-made by carefully selected craftsmen from around the world.

Swoon HQ is on Southwark Bridge Road in London’s SE1, just a stone’s throw from Southside Print London Bridge, so we were an obvious choice when they started looking for a commercial printing company. We print their letterheads, compliments slips and other stationery as well as recently supplying a suite of 14 full colour, A4, foam board information cards for their own internal use. We supplied the information display cards ‘same day’ and, as only one of each card was required, these were an ideal application for our digital printing service.
