‘Click & Collect’ Printing in London SE1

Click & Collect printing in London SE1

As we said in our last post, one of the great things about our new online print shop is the ability to order and pay for your printing 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. So, even if it’s the weekend, a Bank Holiday, Christmas Day or 3am in the morning, you can still order your printing without needing to leave your home or office. Of course, you can also order on the go from your mobile device.  Either way, you can then tick one more thing off your ‘to do’ list, safe in the knowledge that your job is now already heading into production.

What’s even better, though, is that companies and organisations close to London Bridge, Borough and SE1 can ‘Click & Collect’. There are several benefits:

Click & Collect printing from Tabard Street, London SE1‘Click & Collect’ is Convenient

When ordering online, simply select ‘Collect in store’ in the Delivery section and then you can collect your printing from our London SE1 shop as soon as it’s ready. Collect at any time during our office hours (9am to 5.30pm week days) or call us to see if we’re likely to be around outside of those hours. Click & Collect means you don’t need to wait in for a delivery and also your printing is going to be as fresh as the moment it came off the printing press.

Click & Collect is Faster

Another huge benefit of Click & Collect is that you can usually get your printing a day sooner than is possible with the ‘delivered’ option.

True 24/7 convenience for print ordering in London & SE1.

Re-Order with a Couple of Clicks

Once you’ve ordered once from our new online print shop, you can log in at any time to see a record of current and historical orders. This makes re-ordering a breeze — simply find a previous order in your account and re-order it without having to start again from scratch. That’s both convenient and a great time-saver!

Rescue Unfinished Orders

Even incomplete orders are included in your order history! Let’s say you were running late for a meeting or were interrupted at the last minute so couldn’t complete your online order. No problem at all — as long as you were logged in when you began, simply log in again when you’re ready to resume and you’ll see your unfinished order right there in your free account. Simply click ‘View’ against the incomplete order concerned and take the final steps to finish it off. With just a click or two, it’ll be queued in our system and heading directly to production.

Know When your Print will be Ready

You’ll know when your order will be ready right away. On every print product order screen, it shows the date that your printing will be ready. In fact two dates are shown — a ‘collect by’ date and a ‘delivery by’ date. So, simply choose whether you would like to collect from the shop or whether you’d prefer to have your printing delivered to your door (usually one working day later than the collection option). Either way, the price is the same*.

Online Printing – from Business Cards to Stationery, Leaflets & Posters

Whether you opt for Free Delivery or Click & Collect, you can order an ever-growing selection of printed products. At time of writing, these include* business cards, stationery packs, letterheads, compliments slips, leaflets (folded or unfolded) and posters (A4 to A0 sizes). Printing for ‘Venice in Peril’, London SW6

Printing for Venice in Peril Fund

Southside Print has recently had the honour of being the chosen London printer for a charity based just a few miles away; the Venice in Peril Fund. We printed the A4 flyers/postcards shown below, right, as well as some DL sized flyers, A5 flyers and stationery that included various business cards. The A5 postcards shown below were printed on 190gsm White Essential Offset card. This wood-free paper stock has a trendy, uncoated feel, offers great value for money and gives a superb printed result on our digital and litho printing presses. The DL flyers were printed on the same material and publicised some of the charity’s spring lectures last year.

The charity has also used Southside Print to print onto ‘Favini Alga Carta’, their very own recycled paper that was developed from algae, originally from the Venice lagoon but more recently from other marine sites. You can read more about this innovative paper, along with the incredible idea behind it, here.

VeniceAbout Venice in Peril

Anyone who has ever eaten a ‘Veneziana’ pizza at a Pizza Express restaurant will have already heard of the Venice in Peril Fund. A small discretionary donation, included with every Veneziana pizza order, has raised over £2 million for the charity since the partnership began in 1975.

The Venice in Peril Fund came into existence following the terrible floods of 1966, which severely damaged both Venice and Florence, Italy. Initially called the Art & Archives Rescue Fund (IAARF), the fund-raising activity for the Florence region had served its purpose by 1967, so the focus for fundraising was redirected solely towards Venice and the organisation was re-launched as The Venice in Peril Fund that we know today.

Venice in Peril has its UK headquarters just 7 miles West of Southside Print in Putney, London SW6. The registered charity has been in existence for over forty years, during which time it has raised millions of pounds, primarily for the conservation of buildings, monuments and works of art in Venice. The city remains under constant threat from the surrounding water, rising sea levels and pollution but the charity goes much further than helping to fight only those threats. Along with its conservation work, the Venice in Peril Fund pays for studies, events, education and advocacy for, and about, the region. In support of this work, Venice in Peril also promotes a deeper understanding of Venice – its complex history, the contribution it has made to world culture and the challenges it faces today – to encourage responsible and informed engagement with the city.

On the 24th of April, the 12th Kirker Spring Lecture will be taking place at the Royal Geographical Society in London SW7. The lecture is by award-winning restaurateur, writer and broadcaster Russell Norman. Russell operates and co-founded several restaurants under the POLPO banner in London and elsewhere, has won several major awards for his books, presented a six-part prime-time documentary (The Restaurant Man) for BBC2 in 2014 and has been recognised by Debretts as one of the 500 most influential people in the UK. His lecture is entitled “The Food of Venice and the Lagoon: how its culinary traditions are as important as its people and its stones” and is being held in aid of the Venice in Peril Fund. Doors open at 6pm with a reception followed by the lecture itself at 7pm. Tickets are £20. More detail about the event, along with ticket purchases, is available here. You can also click the thumbnail image of the A5 postcard/flyer published for this lecture, shown on the right, for more information. The flyer is one of several marketing pieces printed for the charity by Southside Print in London SE1.

The Venice in Peril Fund is at 11 Hurlingham Studios, Ranelagh Gardens, London SW6 3PA and can be contacted on 020 7736 6891. Envelopes – A Comprehensive Guide

A comprehensive guide to envelopes

Having recently produced some overprinted C6 envelopes for local client The Dragon Café, we thought we’d put together a useful ready-reference guide to envelopes. We’ve included information on available shapes, sizes, formats, sealing mechanisms, styles, materials and more. There is also a note about overprinting options for those who need their own, unique envelope, perhaps showing their branding or allowing the envelope to serve a specific purpose, for example for collecting donations (see The Dragon Café’s fundraising example, shown below right). Take a look below and bookmark this page if you think it might be useful for future reference — we hope so!

Overprinted fundraising envelopes for Mental Fight Club, SE1Envelope Sizes

The three most popular size conventions for envelopes are ‘ISO C’ (‘C’ for short), ‘DL’ and square envelopes and we’ll explain how they work in a moment. There is also a fourth range, being the ‘ISO D’ sizes (used to suit ‘ISO B’ paper sizes) but they’re rarely used in the UK, so we’ll not go into detail about those here.

‘ISO C’ Sized Envelopes

You will be almost certainly be familiar with A4, A3 and A2 sized papers. These come from the ‘ISO A’ series of paper sizes. ‘ISO C’ sizes are a complementary range of sizes that are widely used with envelopes to house ‘A’ sized papers. So, for example, an unfolded A4 letter would fit neatly inside a C4 envelope (with a little breathing space). Meanwhile, if you fold an A4 letter in half (so it’s now A5), it would fit perfectly into a C5 envelope. If folded again into A6, it would fit nicely in a C6 envelope, and so on. Here are the most popular ISO C envelope sizes:

  • C3 envelopes are 458mm x 324mm
  • C4 envelopes are 324mm x 229mm
  • C5 envelopes are 229mm x 162mm
  • C6 envelopes are 162mm x 114mm

Now we’ll come onto what happens if you fold that A4 letter into three rather than two …

ISO ‘DL’ and ‘DLE’ Envelope Sizes

The envelope size 220mm x 110mm is commonly referred to by stationers and printers as ‘DL’ (short for DIN Lang, meaning DIN ‘Long’). It’s a perfect size to suit A4 letters folded into three. However, strictly speaking, true ‘DL’ is actually exactly one-third A4 i.e. 210mm x 99mm but true DL is seldom, if ever, used in the UK. So when we refer to ‘DL envelopes’ when speaking with stationers or printers in the UK, it’s understood that we’re really talking about ‘DLE’ size (the true name for 220mm x 110mm). It’s one of life’s little quirks!

Square Envelopes

The UK enjoys a huge range of different square envelope sizes. They are too numerous to list in full but the most popular among them include:

  • 80mm square
  • 100mm square
  • 105mm square
  • 110mm square
  • 116mm square
  • 120mm square
  • 126mm square
  • 130mm square
  • 140mm square
  • 155mm square
  • 160mm square
  • 164mm square
  • 220mm square
  • 240mm square
  • 254mm square
  • 317mm square

Envelope Opening Formats

When ordering envelopes from your printer or stationer, they may ask you whether you require ‘wallet’ or ‘pocket’ format. But what does that mean? ‘Wallet’ format simply means Read more

Printed Folders, Inserts, Business Cards & Brochures for Recruitment Consultancy

Printed folders, inserts, business cards & brochures for FBR Recruitment Consultancy

Southside Print has been kept beautifully busy recently by FBR Construction Recruitment, a consultancy based in Southampton. So, despite this customer being well outside of London, our printing and design services were cost effective, competitively priced and logistically viable through the use of inexpensive and reliable overnight couriers. All items were designed by Starling Design who, like Southside Print, are based in London SE1. The various jobs included:

  • A5, full colour, landscape brochuresOne hundred 8 page A5 landscape brochures, which were printed in full colour onto 250gsm silk stock for the interior pages and 350gsm matching stock for the covers. The digital printing machine used in production was an HP Indigo press which, although digital, outputs quality so high it’s virtually impossible to tell it apart from full litho quality (litho being the benchmark against which all printing is compared). Using a digital process saves both time and money and also means that low quantities like this are completely viable, whereas such a small quantity would have been cost-prohibitive on a full litho press due to the higher set-up costs and printing plates required. Once printed, the brochures were laminated with ‘soft touch’ laminate. All in all, the result was excellent.
  • Several hundred double-side business cards, printed in full colour, using a 450gsm silk coated card and, again, a soft touch laminate to protect the cards as well as giving them a lovely tactile feel.
  • Oversize A5 printed folders with brochure, inserts & business card holderOne hundred oversize A5 folders which had a 5mm gusset (spine capacity) and a pocket for leaflets etc. The pocket also included slots to hold a business card. The folders were printed in full colour both sides onto 350gsm silk coated card and matt laminated both sides.
  • We also produced various A4 inserts. Some of these were for use in the folders, so were folded down to A5. They were printed onto 140gsm white ‘Arcoset’ paper and were printed both sides in full colour.

Printed Stationery for ‘Alive and Kicking’ Charity

Printed letterheads and business cards for Alive and Kicking

One of the most interesting customers that we’ve printed for in recent times is Alive and Kicking, who have an office here in London. The registered charity helps to improve lives in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana on the African continent and we’ll explain the innovative yet amazingly effective way they achieve that below.

Printed Letterheads & Business Cards

First, though, a quick note about what we print for them. In their case, it’s very straight forward. We currently print just their letterheads and business cards, which just goes to prove that Southside Print customers don’t have to print much with us in order to be featured in our bi-monthly blog. The letterheads are printed on 100gsm white paper and the business cards are printed double-sided on 340gsm white card, for a few different personnel. The charity supplied its own artwork in this case.

Now, though, we’ll go back to the charity itself and highlight the amazing work it does.

Alive and Kicking

With its headquarters in London, Alive and Kicking is an award-winning African ‘social enterprise’ which creates ethical employment for adults at the same time as improving the quality of life and health of disadvantaged youths. The registered charity uses business practices and the African continent’s passion for football to boost local economies, provide children with the right equipment to play and uses sport as a tool to help combat the spread of deadly diseases including HIV and malaria.

Making a footballSince it was established in 2004, Alive and Kicking has produced over 750,000 footballs, 20% of which were donated to good causes. Alive and Kicking employees individually screen print the footballs by hand and this allows them to be used for promotional purposes by businesses, to be personalised for individuals or printed with messages of any kind for a myriad of other purposes. Every football is hand-stitched using leather which, being locally sourced, helps to support the local communities. This material also means that the footballs are tough, durable and repairable. The organisation is the only formal manufacturer of sports balls on the African continent.

The Alive and Kicking programme has 3 main objectives: Read more

Letterhead Update for G Worrall & Son, London SE1

Letterhead printing & artwork for G Worralls

Southside Print London Bridge recently undertook a very straight forward letterhead update for G Worrall & Son, the Master Locksmith just a few blocks away in Great Suffolk Street, SE1. The update was needed following the launch of their new website at www.gworralls.com and the idea was simply to update their existing letterhead in order to use the same font on both items – and to re-make the artwork in the process.

About G Worrall & Son

G WorrallsG Worralls are a well-established, highly professional locksmith. Founded way back in 1896, they provide first class lock repair and replacement, key cutting and call-out services throughout London. So, whether you’ve lost your keys and are locked out, need a G Worrall & Son shop, London SE1security update for your property or simply need duplicate keys cut, G Worralls are there to help, whatever type of key or lock you have. They stock all the major brands as well as many specialist varieties including restricted key locks, master key systems, digital locks and code locks. Find out more about their services at www.gworralls.com or call 0207 407 8498 to get through to the friendly team at their SE1 shop.

An in-house artwork service

Going back to the printing, the letterhead for G Worralls is an example of where Southside Print’s in-house artwork department can be very convenient, because the original letterhead artwork was not available in this case. So, we simply replicated the existing letterhead layout, updated a few minor details as requested and, of course, changed the company name at the top so it used the same font family as featured on the new website (the font is Ubuntu, in case you were wondering). Once approved this allowed us to print off 2000 new letterheads, on 100gsm white ‘Navigator’ paper, using our litho printing press — simple!

In-house graphic design services

It goes without saying, of course, that we are also more than happy to supply totally new graphic design. So if you are looking for a complete makeover for your printed graphics, our in-house design team are ready and waiting to help. We can Read more

Printed Business Cards, Flyers & Brochures for Gembuild

Printed brochures for Gembuild

A garden buildings company, based in West Sussex, has recently been keeping us busy here at Southside Print in London Bridge. Gembuild, who design and install custom garden buildings throughout the UK, were recently referred to Southside Print for printing and production of their sales and marketing material. These included business cards, various flyers and a new brochure.

Full colour, matt laminated business cardsThe Printing

The business cards, shown on the right, were litho printed in full colour and then matt laminated both sides.

The two different flyers (not shown) were digitally printed on 170gsm white A4 ‘Essential Silk’ stock before being folded in half to A5 size.

A new 32 page A5 landscape brochure is also hot off the press. This was digitally printed in full colour throughout, matt laminated to the cover and saddle-stitched to the spine.

Full colour digitally printed brochures with matt laminated coversThere are a couple of notable aspects to this particular batch of printing — firstly, all lamination was produced in-house using our brand new ‘Matrix’ thermal laminator. This new piece of kit is the No.1 commercial laminator in Europe and allows us to laminate in matt, ‘soft touch’ or gloss finish, totally in-house. What this means for customers is that our lamination will be much faster and better value for them compared to the old days when, like nearly all printers, we sub-contracted all lamination to specialist trade finishing suppliers.

The second notable aspect to much of the printing above is that it uses a digital printing process, which lends itself to ‘print on demand’ as it’s known. Because our digital printing process requires no printing plates, set-up is quick, easy and inexpensive. This means that printing can be ordered when actually needed (true ‘print on demand’) rather than having to order and store large quantities like you might have to for litho printed items — just to keep the unit cost down. So, low quantities are possible, at the press of a button, as and when needed.

About Gembuild

Gembuild are based in West Sussex between Horsham and Crawley. They design, build and install bespoke garden buildings throughout the UK. These include garden offices, garden studios and garden rooms as well as park homes and timber-framed buildings that are suitable for all-year-round accommodation.
