What Makes Perfect Binding So … Perfect?

What Makes Perfect Binding so Perfect?

‘Perfect binding’ is one of the most popular and impressive ways of binding any kind of printed publication. It has a great look and lends some sophistication to any book, booklet, brochure, annual report, catalogue or magazine. ‘Wiro’ and ‘saddle-stitched’ binding, although both professional and presentable, look a little more basic by comparison. Perfect binding gives a publication more gravitas; a feeling of added value and something that subtly says ‘I am an important document’ without even trying. As such, perfect bound books are far more likely to be kept or handed from person to person. That’s great for your business and marketing goals.

Printing & perfect binding for Flint WinesSimilar to a ‘soft-back’ or ‘paperback’ book, perfect binding gives a professional finish with a ‘square’ spine, which can be printed on because it’s all part of the one-piece cover. So, you can have full colour graphics and imagery printed continuously from front cover, across the spine and around to the back cover, all without any interruption if you like. Of course, this applies to the addition of special finishes too, like gloss UV varnish, metallic foil and lamination to name just a few.

Tech Spec

At Southside Print in London SE1, we print and perfect bind totally in-house. That means total control over colour and quality, speedy turnarounds and the most competitive pricing. There are just a couple of limitations:

  • We can perfect bind up to A3 in length or width (so spines as long as 420mm are not a problem — that’s big!).
  • The spine can be as thick as a staggering 90mm — that allows a huge number of pages in the book and is thicker than many old-style phone directories!

We also use a super-strong new glue. This keeps your pages and covers securely bound — for the long term.

Our perfect binding service is also available on an overnight basis. So, if you’re in a terrible rush to get important documents and publications printed and perfect bound for the next business day, we can usually help, particularly if you give us a little bit of warning. This is great for annual reports that need to be ready for board meetings and AGM’s, or things like proposals, tenders, pitch documents and other important presentations that could win your company or organisation its next major contract.

Some exciting news to share with you…

As a welcome gift from Rob the new owner of Southside Print SE1, you can save 10% off the price of business stationery for the next two weeks until 17th April 2018.

It’s Alan here from Southside Print, with a rather special announcement. What’s more, it’s exciting on several levels as it’s a win-win (… win) for you, me and a lovely couple, who I’ll tell you more about in a minute.

So, what’s happening?

Well, after 35 years in the printing industry, I’ve decided to hang up my printing apron, grab my slippers, put the kettle on and spend more time at home with my lovely wife. You’ve guessed it … I’m retiring!

It’s been amazing working with lovely clients like you over the last 35 years and I wanted to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you before I went off into the sunset. So, “thank you” — you’ve done us all proud over the years and I wish you all well for the future.

Which brings me back to that lovely couple …

I’d like to introduce you to Robert Phillips (‘Rob’) and Sarah Codd. As well as being recently married and rather lovely, they are now also the proud new owners of Southside Print. They’re print veterans too, having worked in the industry for almost 31 years. So, they really know their stuff! Rob and Sarah will be taking over from 30 March 2018 and will join the existing team of Matt, Aidan, Paul, Eve and Linda, so you’ll still see the same familiar faces as well as the two new arrivals.

Sarah Codd and Rob Phillips, new owners of Southside Print, SE1.

Multiple benefits for you …

I mentioned at the start that this would also be a ‘win’ for you, as a customer. In fact it’s a multiple win! First, Rob and Sarah will be bringing with them some snazzy new equipment, so you’ll be able to get even more out of Southside Print. Just one example is a new digital press that can print on sheets up to 1.2 metres in length and will allow us to make a 16 page A5 booklet out of just one sheet. That’s going to be great for speed and economy!

Secondly, you’ll soon see the benefits of a new, significant investment into software that’ll allow you to track your work during production — and much, much more. You should see this introduced around Autumn 2018 and we’ll give you more detail nearer the time.

Last but not least, save 10% on stationery printing

Save 10% off all business stationery until 17th April 2018.As a welcome gift from Rob, you can save 10% off the price of business stationery for the next two weeks. That includes business cards (minimum quantity just 100), letterheads, continuation sheets and compliments slips etc. Simply mention “ROB’S WELCOME OFFER” at the time of your order and you’ll receive the saving (valid until 17th April).

So it’s farewell from me …

My last day at Southside Print was the 29th of March so, from the 30th, I left you in the very capable hands of Rob and Sarah. That just leaves me to wish you a very happy, healthy and successful future and to say a huge ‘thank you’ once again for keeping me so busy for all of these years.

My very best regards to you,

Alan Garelick

Wishing You a Very Happy Easter!

Our food parcel with the Rev’d Jonathan Sedgwick, Jane and the team at Saint George The Martyr's foodbank.

A very happy Easter to all our customers, neighbours, suppliers and readers. This year, instead of sending out Easter cards, chocolate and Easter eggs, we donated a charitable food box to the local food bank located at Saint George The Martyr church. This will help to distribute much needed food to those who cannot afford to buy it themselves at this time. Saint George is based in Borough High Street (SE1 1JA) and boxes of nutritionally balanced food are given free to those who are in crisis, who have been going hungry or who are in poverty for one reason or another (see this link if you would like to learn how to obtain a food bank voucher). The food bank is part of a network of food banks supported locally by Waterloo Foodbank and Nationally by The Trussell Trust. We sincerely hope our donation of food and goodies helps some local people enjoy Easter more than might otherwise have been possible.

Digital printing in full colour for Saint George The MartyrEaster at Saint George The Martyr

Saint George The Martyr has a full itinerary lined up over Easter, starting on Maundy Thursday (29th March), through Good Friday, Palm Sunday and Easter Monday (2nd April) — there is a lot going on! See their website for programme details. On the right, you can see some related printing that we recently printed for Saint George. One leaflet and a matching poster publicises the ‘Holy Week and Easter’ events at St George for this Easter. The other leaflet was printed to publicise ‘St George in Southwark Festival’, which is a free festival of art, poetry, theatre and music that will begin in mid-April. Everything was printed in full colour on our in-house digital presses at the SE1 print shop in Tabard Street.

Call us on 020 7378 6754* if you have any digital, litho or large format printing requirements and we’ll be delighted to help. We’re conveniently close to London Bridge and Borough stations and also offer full graphic design and print management services. Watch this blog and our social media profiles for even more services, which are coming in the near future.

Brochure Printing in London Bridge, SE1

Printed brochures

Full colour brochures printed for Munro & ForsterBrochures are a priceless marketing tool for just about any business or organisation. Akin to a mini shop window or store front they will work hard to silently market your product or service to your target market, especially if written, designed and printed well. That’s helped still further if they also include professionally generated photographs or illustrations to showcase your products or services in the best possible light. With a well executed brochure, all your key sales and marketing information will be available anywhere, all distilled down in a handy, portable format. Unlike a physical store, they can be perused at your prospect’s leisure, whether mailed in the post, distributed from dispensers, left at coffee tables and receptions or handed out face-to-face.

Brochure Formats

Typical brochure formats include:
  • Saddle-stitched printed brochures for Gembuildstandard ‘saddle-stitched’ brochures;
  • wiro-bound brochures;
  • perfect bound brochures;
  • hybrid brochures e.g. that may have extra fold-out sections;
  • brochures that double up as folders, for example with pockets for inserts at the front or back.

Shapes & Sizes

Perfect bound 'Power to Change' brochuresMost brochures are based upon the ‘A’ sized paper sizes, for example A4, A5 and A6 etc. Such sizes can be presented in portrait or landscape mode, although portrait format tends to be most common as it’s more cost-effective to produce due to the way it uses standard stock sizes (less waste).

Aside from the standard ‘A’ sizes, there are also a few other brochure shapes that are quite effective, including:

  • Square brochures (typical sizes include 210mm square and 148.5mm square) — these have a certain charm about them;
  • 6-page format (like a wide gate fold);
  • Wiro bound, full colour brochures 'Power to Change'‘DL’ sized mini brochures (most often portrait in format, being H210mm x W99mm, which is easily accomplished simply by folding an A4 sheet into three).

Each of these sizes and formats will give your brochure a different feel which will, in turn, affect that all important first impression — important because your brand, product and service are all at stake. If your brochure looks poorly conceived and underwhelming, that is inevitably how your product, brand or service will also be perceived, so it’s important to take everything into consideration and to get it right. Printing for Bikecation, a Cycling Holiday Company in Borough High Street

Digital & large format printing for Bikecation in Borough High Street

Just like the organisation featured in our last post, our latest case study is for a customer based in Borough High Street. This time it’s the turn of a dynamic cycling holiday company, aptly named Bikecation. Located just a stone’s throw from our print works in SE1, it made good sense for them to try the services of a local printer and we were very pleased to help. Print jobs included some eye-catching posters, which were printed on 200gsm ‘photo satin’ stock, along with some promotional business cards, which were printed on 300gsm silk coated stock. Bikecation supplied the design and artwork files and, as you can see, the design is striking and contemporary. Production was turned around very fast, although the customer didn’t really require them for about a week — we just like to get ahead at Southside Print!

Take a look at some of the A1 posters:

About Bikecation

Bikecation started life after a conversation between two cycling enthusiasts; Rob Penn, formerly a City lawyer, and Jamie Paterson, a businessman. Both were keen advocates of the simple pleasures of bike riding and enjoyed travelling. Bikecation turned their shared dream of starting a custom cycling holiday company into reality. As well as being a tour guide for the company, Rob has a best-selling book ‘It’s all About the Bike: the Pursuit of Happiness on Two Wheels’ which has been translated into nine languages and has been made into a BBC documentary called ‘Ride of My Life‘.

Bikecation offers a wide range of custom cycling holidays including leisure cycling holidays, road cycling holidays, a more adventurous style of guided cycling trip called Rob Raids (personally guided by Rob Penn), bespoke mini breaks, cycling training camp breaks, cycling sportives and even ‘Watch & Ride’ breaks where you can watch famous bike races like the Tour de France whilst also getting the chance to ride the course yourself before the actual event.

Included amongst the cycling breaks on offer are corporate tours, private guided holidays and even organised charity events. Destinations include a wide range of beautiful locations in the UK as well as Europe and it’s up to you whether or not you’d like to be accompanied by a Bikecation cycling guide on your particular trip. Bikecation also moves your luggage for you, so you are free to enjoy the cycling and the stunning views. So, whether you’re into slow-paced family cycling along gentle routes in Wales, island hopping in Croatia, doing wine and food tours by bike in Bordeaux, or really going hell-for-leather up classic cycling climbs in the Alps, Bikecation has something to suit you. The range of options is outstanding! What’s more, all hotels are checked and pre-vetted to suit cyclists and sports enthusiasts as well as being hand-picked so they’re perfectly located along the very best cycling routes.

Printing for London Charity Hestia

Digital & Large Format Printing for Hestia, London SE1

Sincere thanks go out to London charity Hestia, who are based just a stone’s throw away from us in Borough High Street, SE1, and have been keeping us extraordinarily busy in recent times.  At Southside Print, we’ve produced an incredible array of printed items for them, including leaflets, pamphlets, posters, reports and brochures. So — a good mixture of both digital printing and large format printing to date. We’ll go into more detail about all of the printing later on in this post but, first, we want to tell you all about Hestia and the incredible work that they do …

Hestia

Hestia empowers people and changes livesHestia is a London-wide charity which, simply put, empowers people and changes lives. The charity has its roots back in 1970, originally starting as a soup run for those living rough in the Covent Garden Market region, under the stewardship of Jim Horne, who himself had personal experience of homelessness. Having changed its name to Hestia Housing and Support by 1998, the charity now helps individuals and families who may be in crisis by helping them fulfil aspirations, stay healthy and gain independence. Each year, the organisation helps approximately 9000 adults and children in the London region. These are people who:

  • may be victims of domestic abuse
  • may be victims of modern slavery
  • may have mental health issues
  • may require emotional and practical support in order to succeed in their daily lives
  • may have learning and/or physical disabilities
  • may be ex-offenders who want to make a new start
  • may be old, infirm, young care leavers or vulnerable in some way
  • may be addicted to drugs, substances or alcohol
  • may be having difficulties with their finances
  • are having problems finding somewhere permanent to live

The Phoenix Project – Helping Victims of Modern Slavery Rebuild Their Lives

Hestia, a London charity based in Borough High StreetHestia is launching a new initiative early this year; the Phoenix Project. This is an important scheme which helps victims of modern slavery. By partnering with specialist volunteers from language education, business, health/well-being, law, housing, therapy and other parts of the public sector, Hestia helps victims of modern slavery along the path to recovery, safety and independence.

The charity is currently inviting applications from interested parties, from the sectors mentioned above, who would potentially like to get involved in this extremely worthwhile initiative. Applicants need to be good listeners, enjoy meeting new people and be good at building relationships. More information can be found on the charity’s Opportunities page and a leaflet can also be downloaded here. For any questions about the project, please get in touch with Jenny Harrison, the Phoenix Project Coordinator, on 07469 857 242 or email phoenixproject@hestia.org.

Hestia's Phoenix Project helps victims of modern slavery along the path to recovery, safety and independenceHelping 400 victims of human trafficking every day, supporting 29 refuges for homeless women and children and helping over 2,400 adults per year to recover from mental health crises requires a large amount of resources — and that’s just a few examples of the work that Hestia does. £86k will be needed this year for the charity’s ‘Children Service’, nearly £50K will be needed to continue to help women facing severe hardship, often following abusive relationships, £25k will need to be raised for Hestia’s Good Energy Club, which helps to improve the lives of people with mental health conditions, and a further £50k will be needed to help ensure that survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery are not re-trafficked. It all adds up to a huge amount of money. With no funds received directly from the Government, Hestia relies entirely on the financial support of the general public and would welcome donations from those who are able to give. Please visit this page if you are able to donate towards this very worthwhile cause, or get involved in one of our fundraising events here. Thank you.

To learn more about Hestia, visit www.hestia.org, call 020 7378 3100 or write to Hestia Housing & Support, 1st & 2nd Floor, Maya House, 134-138 Borough High Street, London SE1 1LB.

Printing for SE1 Cafés, Bars, Pubs & Restaurants

Printing for SE1 Cafés, Bars, Pubs & Restaurants

This post is for anyone running a food and drink establishment in SE1 and beyond. Whether you run a café, bar, bistro, restaurant, pizzeria, burger bar, coffee house, public house or even a hotel, you should find something useful here.

At Southside Print, we print a huge variety of items for eating and drinking establishments throughout Borough, London Bridge, SE1 and London generally. These include anything from menus and posters to banners and table talkers. We’ll cover a more complete list below.

We’re based in Tabard Street in London’s SE1 region, so are right in the middle of a hugely popular community with busy cafés, restaurants, bars and even high quality street food around many corners — it’s absolutely thriving. ‘Foodies’ have a massive choice of different foods on tap, from every continent of the globe. Choose Italian food, Greek, Indian, Chinese, French, Turkish — in fact pretty much any kind of food you can think of will be catered for in London’s SE1. It’s a paradise for the hungry! It also means that, as printers, we’re incredibly used to supplying just the right printed sales and marketing collateral for anyone running an eating and drinking establishment.

Examples of what we can print include:

Menus for Simply Indian restaurantMenus & Menu Covers

We produce a great many different types of printed menu. So, whether you require the whole menu made into a booklet, a traditional fold-out printed menu, or just a protective printed cover in which to house your own in-house print-outs, we can help. There are lots of options and these also include matt or gloss lamination or encapsulation to protect your menus from food or drink spillage and to make them last far longer. We print using an on demand digital process and that means we can supply just one menu if that’s all you need, or a much larger quantity. See the images (right and above) for just a couple of different menu examples. Click any of them for a larger view.

Table talker exampleTable-Talkers

Many eating and drinking establishments also have a stand-up, folded information card of some kind on every table and sometimes also at the till. These ‘table-talkers’ as they’re known, can tell customers about special offers, today’s specials, or about some kind of loyalty club or scheme. We can print and produce these for you, of course. Table-talkers are a great way to impart your sales message to a captive audience if you place one at every table. As with menus, they can be matt or gloss laminated so that they are protected, durable and easily wiped clean.

NCR order pads for Nelson's RestaurantNCR Order Pads

One of the key tools in virtually every eatery is the waiter or waitress’s order pad. We can supply multi-sheet, multi-part ‘NCR’ (no carbon required) pads so that everyone gets their own copy of every order. Perhaps the customer gets a white copy, the waiter gets a blue copy, the chef gets a pink copy and the accounts staff get a blue copy. With NCR sets, as we call them in the trade, several copies of each order are automatically made when the waiting staff writes out their notes with a pen. They come with a board back so they’re easier to write on and can be made into multiple sets and convenient pads.

Posters printed for 28-50 restaurantsPosters & Banners

Large format posters or banners displayed on walls or in the front window can also be a great way to announce your menu, special offer, seasonal dish or special of the day. They’re really a no-brainer and are also a great way to cross-sell to your captive audience of customers while they’re waiting or relaxing. We can supply posters at pretty much any size whether it’s A3, A2, A1, A0 or larger and hanging banners can be enormous if needed. They can also be waterproof and eyeleted for exterior use, if required — great for when you want to announce availability for a special date (e.g. booking up for Christmas, public holidays or special occasions).

Leaflets and flyers for Blackfriars Wine BarFlyers & Leaflets

Flyers and leaflets are another marketing item worth their weight in gold, for any walk-in business. Leaflets for customers inside your establishment can also help to cross-sell and communicate your products, events, specials and special offers in a timely way. What’s more, your audience is ready and waiting to read them during a relaxed moment while they await their food and drink. Perhaps give them an excuse to take your leaflet home with them, then keep it, for instance using a voucher code for their next visit or some kind of special deal that’s appealing. Flyers handed out in the streets nearby can also work beautifully to attract people to your establishment. Southside Print would be Read more

The Huge Potential of the Humble Business Card

The Humble Business Card – & Its Huge Potential

For such a tiny item of print, the humble business card can punch well above its weight as a business marketing tool. However, it can only do that if it’s designed and printed exceptionally well, then handed over in tip-top condition. First impressions really count.

Despite being such an important promotional item, business cards can be extremely economical to print – even with extra finishes and embellishments (we’ll come to those shortly). So, it makes sense to ensure that business cards are well designed in the first place, printed professionally with high-end printing machines and then protected at all times before hand-over. Keep them safe when storing them or transporting them so they are pristine and at their most impressive when delivered to your prospects and contacts. Going that small extra mile for a relatively modest price, together with a little bit of care, is really a no-brainer — there is absolutely no need to spoil that all-important first impression for the sake of just a few pennies per card and a little care.

Business Card Sizes & Shapes

Business card standard and non-standard sizes and shapesThe ‘standard’ size for business cards is ‘credit card’ size, usually being about 85mm x 55mm, however, sizes aren’t carved in stone so your card can actually be any size you like. Also, you don’t necessarily have to limit yourself to a rectangular card with standard ‘square cut’ corners — shapes are also possible.

  • You can have rounded corners on all, or just some, of the corners –  in fact opposing corners with curves can look rather funky (see example on the bottom row, on the right).
  • You can get us to die-cut the business cards to a totally bespoke shape. These can be geometric, circular, square or lozenge-shaped cards or totally irregular shapes to follow the graphics or image printed, for those who want to be a little different.

Lamination Options

Any kind of lamination, including matt, gloss or ‘soft touch’ options, can give business cards a nice feel as well as adding a protective layer to help limit the effects of wear, fingerprints and moisture. Lamination can also affect the colours printed underneath, with matt and soft-touch lamination flattening the contrast to give a modern, fresh feel, and gloss lamination deepening contrast in images and photographs at the same time as making the colours look more deep and saturated.

Spot UV Varnish

Spot UV varnish is also very popular on business cards. This clear, highly glossy varnish can really make particular features on your business card stand out. That’s particularly true when the remainder of the card is designed and finished so as to be very matt. So, if the card is printed on uncoated card or if it’s matt laminated, for example, that would work beautifully when juxtaposed against a glossy, UV varnished spot-printed area. A glossy spot UV varnished logo, for instance, can really make the logo stand out and draw attention to your brand, making it a focal point of the card, catching the light at certain angles and adding a feel of real high quality to boot. We can also gloss varnish with a range of surface textures – just ask for details.

Card Stock

The base card used can also make a big difference to the final impact of your business card. Standard business cards might use a ‘coated’ card base (matt, silk or gloss card with a special surface coating which lifts colours) or an ‘uncoated’ card for those who want their cards to look a little more ‘natural’ and don’t mind the lower contrast colours which result.

Within those core card types, there are also many more sub-types of card. These include recycled card for those who wish to be as eco-friendly as they can, partly recycled for those who wish to be eco-friendly but perhaps get some of the benefits of non-recycled card (e.g. brighter whites), tinted card stock (e.g. cream, ivory, pale colours and various whites) and finally textured cards. We can supply business cards with flat surfaces, a linen type texture, an ‘onion skin’ texture, ‘laid’ textures (small stripes in the make-up of the card stock) and many other kinds of texture. Technical note: while the ‘flat’ standard card types might be laminated, the textured variety would not usually be laminated otherwise the process of lamination tends to flatten any inherent texture to a degree, due to the pressure applied during the lamination process.

Attention to detail

Your business card doesn’t need to be single-sided – why not print it double-sided at the very least! Even printing a Read more

Marketing Economically with Leaflets & Flyers

Printed leaflets & flyers for economical marketing

Printed leaflets and flyers are like the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of marketing tools. When designed and used well, they can accomplish a huge range of marketing and PR objectives while being extremely economical to print. Even when printed in reasonably low quantities, each flyer may only cost a few pence. In high quantities, the cost of leaflets and flyers can potentially drop to just fractions of pence each. So, either way, even a modest marketing budget can go a long, long way when you use leaflets and flyers as your weapon of choice for marketing and promotions.

Promotional Uses of Printed Leaflets & Flyers

Leaflets and flyers can be used for many different marketing purposes including:

  • mailing pieces and ‘leaflet drops’;
  • hand-outs in the high street or in-store;
  • mini posters for notice boards and shop windows;
  • free give-aways at the point of sale (e.g. from a leaflet dispenser next to the till);
  • a great way to highlight special offers;
  • a quick and easy way to raise awareness of an event;
  • a way to supply voucher codes to prospects and thereby increase sales;
  • a vehicle for an announcement of some kind;
  • an excellent way to cross-sell (e.g. from one product, service or event to another);
  • a simple and effective way to impart information and even educate your audience;
  • a kind of ‘mini catalogue’ to highlight one or more products and prices.

Printing Options

Choose single or double-sided printing. Choose matt, silk, gloss or uncoated paper depending on your preferred ‘feel’. Matt, silk or gloss coated papers are the usual choice for standard business leaflets. Uncoated papers could be seen to be a little more trendy in feel, lending themselves to more contemporary products and services and anything to do with the great outdoors or eco-related products. Choose thin paper for maximum economy or thick paper for a premium, robust feel. We can laminate your leaflets too — in matt, gloss or ‘soft touch’ finish. Lamination will give them Read more
